John Oesterreicher: A Jewish-Catholic Warrior against Antisemitism

In this Yachad BeYeshua webinar we return to our series on great figures in the modern history of Jewish disciples of Yeshua. Monsignor John Oesterreicher (1904-1993) was a Jewish-Catholic priest and theologian whose life was dedicated to reconciliation between Jews and Christians. Ordained a priest in Austria in 1927, in the 1930s he organized and wrote against Nazi antisemitism. Fleeing Austria for Paris in 1938, Oesterreicher came to the United States in 1940 after the German invasion of France.

In 1953 he founded the Institute of Judaeo-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University In New Jersey. In the years leading up to the Second Vatican Council he pressed the Catholic Church to forcefully renounce antisemitism, and his efforts resulted in the issuing of Nostra Aetate, the landmark Catholic declaration in 1965 which revolutionized Jewish-Christian relations. He was one of its principal authors.

Our presenter is Gregory Glazov, Professor and Chair of Biblical Studies at Seton Hall University. Greg is a Jewish Catholic and a member of Yachad BeYeshua, born in Russia to Jewish dissident parents who were friends of Fr. Alexander Men. Our journey story comes from Jill Kamp Melton, who has worked as a newspaper columnist, executive coach, university educator, professional actress, radio call-in show host, and public relations account director. She is a Messianic Jew living in Arlington, Virginia.
